We have received a query from a fellow collector of French Colonies, but who has not yet been enticed to join our Society.
His query is that
" The Reunion stamp I have, appears to be a variant of the 1891 SG type "J" 5c green without an acute accent above the "E" i.e. SG catalogue number 20A that does not appear in SG's French Colonies Stamp Catalogue 1st Edition 2016.
As you can see in the attached photo, the stamp on the right has a decidedly blue hue and the overprint (type 6) has a missing letter "I" (i.e. "REUN ON").
I will be grateful if you would kindly advise whether you are aware if this variant has been previously identified, and if so where does it appear in a catalogue."
Two of our Members have responded and commented that these stamps are recorded with, and without, accents and that Y&T record that there are also many different shapes and sizes for the 'O' and the 'R': also that he and others have examples of missing letters that he puts down to poor local printing / compositing.
Any further views would be welcome.
